What is NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a national program in Australia that provides funding to people with significant and permanent disabilities to support them in achieving their goals and living independently. Here’s a breakdown of the NDIS:

What it does:

Provides funding for reasonable and necessary supports, such as:

Assistance with daily living activities like showering, dressing, and cooking.
Mobility aids and equipment
Therapy and rehabilitation services
Assistive technology
Support for employment and education
Participation in community activities
Aim to give people with disabilities more choice and control over the support they receive.

Who is eligible:

Australian citizens or permanent residents under 65 years old with a significant and permanent disability that affects their functional capacity.
The disability must be present for at least two years or likely to be present for at least two years.

How it works:

Participants in the NDIS work with a planner to develop a plan that outlines their goals and the support they need to achieve them.
The NDIS funds the supports in the plan through a budget managed by the participant or their nominee.
Participants can choose who they want to provide their support to, from registered NDIS providers to informal supports like family and friends.
